Today, Congressman Joe Morelle announced legislation he authored to establish a home office tax deduction to provide financial relief for the many employees who transitioned to working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"For nearly two years, millions of Americans have been working remotely as an important step to combat the COVID-19 public health crisis--however, in doing so, they often incurred significant expenses during an already financially trying time," said Congressman Joe Morelle. "I'm proud to have introduced this important legislation to provide relief for workers like the countless teachers, social service professionals, and other employees who kept our country running during this pandemic. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to swiftly pass this legislation and ease the financial burden the pandemic has placed on hardworking families."

Due to COVID-19 and the necessary shift to work from home, many Americans have paid out of pocket for home office expenses to make their remote office workable. This legislation will create a temporary above-the-line deduction for business expenses incurred by an employee starting March 13, 2020, through December 31, 2022. Targeted to assist middle-class workers, the benefit will start to phase out for high wage earners. There is no minimum threshold to be eligible for this deduction.
