Jenniffer Gonzalez Announces Availability for Funds for the Development of Renewable Energy on the Island

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón announced a new federal grant opportunity to promote the development of renewable energy in rural communities, which is given under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021 (Public Law 116 - 260).

The Rural Energy Program (REPP) Grant is a program under the federal Department of Agriculture that provides up to 80 percent (not to exceed $2 million) in federal aid to Partnership proposals. Rural Energy Communities (RECP) to develop renewable energy.

"We have been working on the reconstruction of the island's electrical network after the passage of Hurricane María. We know that the network was not only severely affected by the ravages of the natural disaster, but that it was already obsolete and in need of a more resilient structure and alternatives. That is why, in addition to the funds to repair the network, we are promoting options for other complementary energy sources. This grant is another opportunity for state and nonprofit organizations to access this energy and economic development opportunity," said the resident commissioner.

Funds from this grant may be used to support; community energy planning, capacity building and technical assistance, community efficiency and weatherization, and installation and equipping of community-scale renewable energy technologies and systems.
