Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) released the following statement honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr:

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to service, the fight for racial, social and economic justice, and advocating for peace and the well-being of all people. Today we celebrate and honor the life of Dr. King and his courageous and moral call to leadership. As a Reverend, father, husband, and leader in the in the fight to end segregation, expand voting rights, and end poverty across the globe--Dr. King recognized that civil rights, racial justice, and economic well-being are inextricably linked--and that our responsibility to care for our neighbors does not end at our borders, but with a call to service every day.

"Today, we look to Dr. King's legacy as our nation is facing existential threats to our democracy and voting rights across the country. Tomorrow, the U.S. Senate will reconvene to consider the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom To Vote Act, legislation that would restore and protect voting rights and access to the ballot box, and we call on the Senate to honor Dr. King's legacy and protect the right to vote."
