U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) joined U.S. Representatives Carlos Giménez (R-FL), Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL), and María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) in sending a letter to President Joe Biden, U.S. Department of State Secretary Antony Blinken, and U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm criticizing the administration's decision to open negotiations with the illegitimate Maduro narco-regime in Venezuela, and without first consulting Venezuelan Interim President Juan Guaidó.

The signatories of the letter, who collectively represent the largest Venezuelan-American constituency in the United States, urged the Biden Administration to maintain current U.S. sanctions on Nicolás Maduro and his cronies. The lawmakers also pushed the Biden Administration to reaffirm the United States' position that recognizes Interim President Juan Guaidó as the legitimate leader of Venezuela and a commitment that the United States will not allow the importation of Venezuelan energy sources of any kind from state-owned enterprises associated with the Maduro regime.

Rubio is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and Ranking Member of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women's Issues.
