Bacon Votes Against Federal Takeover and Public Funding of Elections

Statement

Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02) today voted against the so-called voting rights legislation, because it does the exact opposite.

"I voted to protect Nebraska's election laws from a federal takeover," said Bacon. "We should not have to submit to any administration of either party by placing the unelected, unaccountable office of the U.S. Attorney General as a "czar" over our election process. Our states are more than capable of conducting their own elections. Further, I oppose the federal funding of congressional campaigns which will cost the taxpayer billions of dollars."

Under this legislation, Speaker Pelosi could receive up to $22.7 million in public dollars for her reelection campaign, and Senate Majority Leader Schumer could receive up to $44.1 million for his reelection campaign.

Other provisions include forcing states to legalize ballot harvesting; an act that is currently prohibited in Nebraska and makes it more difficult for states to maintain their voter lists by prohibiting on new participation in an inter-state registration check system.

"Two years ago, America saw the highest election turnout in 120 years, so it is surprising to hear Speaker Pelosi and others claim that our democracy is in danger," added Bacon.

Democrats are using legislative gimmicks to pass their federal takeover of elections by amending the John Lewis Voting Rights Act into H.R. 5746, which is supposed to extend NASA leasing authority. Because H.R. 5746 has already been considered in the Senate, this is a terrible tango around the filibuster.
