Yesterday, U.S. Congresswoman and Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Joyce Beatty (OH-03) joined her Congressional colleagues in Selma, Alabama to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the Edmund Pettus Bridge crossing, an event commonly referred to as "Bloody Sunday."

"Fifty-seven years ago, John Lewis, Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., and over six hundred brave Americans attempted to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama ," said Beatty.

Beatty added, "They were met with troopers and horsemen armed with clubs. While these brave men and women were unable to cross the bridge that day, they did not give up. Bloody Sunday is not a day of fear and suffering, rather, it is a day for hope and bravery in the face of daunting oppression. Even when the battle seems too great, we must have the courage to persevere and fight for our place at the table. On Sunday, we walked in the spirit of Congressman Lewis, Reverend King, and all those brave souls who brought us to this moment in history. And we also walked for the future of America."

This year marks the second anniversary of the Members of Congress completing this walk in the spirit of Congressman John Lewis, who participated in the original crossings and led this annual pilgrimage until his passing.
