Statement

Date: March 21, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, as the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson begin U.S. Congresswoman and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Joyce Beatty (OH-03) released the following statement:

"I had the pleasure of speaking with Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson earlier this month and it became immediately clear why President Biden chose her. Her words, actions, and readiness clearly demonstrate that she has been preparing for this moment her entire life. From her work on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, to the eight years she spent as a federal trial court judge, to her early days as a public defender, Judge Jackson will bring an unprecedented resume to our nation's highest court. She is poised to be the most historic and impactful Supreme Court Justice of the 21st century. Judge Jackson will also bring her lifetime of perspective as a Black woman, something our nation's highest court has never seen. We know that when America's boardrooms, legislatures, and even the Supreme Court start to resemble America, we all benefit," said Congressional Black Caucus Chair Joyce Beatty.

Today, Judge Jackson was introduced by Judge Thomas Griffith, formerly of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit; and Professor Lisa Fairfax, of the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School.

Questioning of Judge Jackson will continue tomorrow, Tuesday, March 22 at 9:00 AM ET. Members will have the opportunity to ask questions for 30 minutes each, in order of seniority.

On Wednesday, March 23, the hearing will resume at 9:00 AM ET. Members will have the opportunity to ask a second round of questions for 20 minutes each, in order of seniority. The Committee will also meet in closed session on Wednesday to discuss any matters relating to Judge Jackson's FBI background investigation. The Committee does this for every Supreme Court nominee, regardless of whether the background investigation has raised concerns.

The hearings will conclude on Thursday, March 24, with testimony from the American Bar Association (ABA) and outside witnesses. The hearing will once again begin at 9:00 AM ET. Statements by the ABA and other witnesses will be five minutes each; question rounds will also be five minutes each.
