Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement commemorating Yom HaShoah:

"Today on Yom HaShoah we remember the 6 million Jewish lives who were purposefully and systematically murdered at the hands of Nazi Germany. I hope all my constituents will take a moment to honor their memories and join me in an effort to "Never Forget'.

"This day is particularly meaningful to me as a Jewish American, and to my district. The 9th Congressional District of Illinois is home to one of the largest concentrations of Holocaust survivors in the country, but their numbers are growing smaller and smaller with time. Skokie, a village in my district, is home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum, a 65,000 square foot facility dedicated to the preservation of history and the education of future generations. I hope all of my constituents have a chance to visit this wonderful facility. Our community has not forgotten and never will forget its history.

"While we honor and remember those who were lost during the Holocaust, we must recommit ourselves to refusing to repeat the same mistakes that allowed for those atrocities to occur. Hate and extremism are on the rise at home and abroad. Dangerous conspiracy theories and misinformation continue to run rampant. Synagogues and Jewish community centers have been targeted, and antisemitism continues to rear its ugly head, even in our own community. "Never Again' means we must combat hate and genocide wherever and whenever it exists, and I thank the hundreds of my neighbors who stood with me at the United Against Antisemitism Rally in Glenview on Sunday. I see you and I am with you.

"Today I call on all of you to speak up in the face of hatred and indifference. We must stand in solidarity to oppose antisemitism and all forms of hate wherever they occur. Together we will "Never Forget' and together we will ensure "Never Again.'"
