Congressman Dan Kildee, Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, highlighted new federal funding he secured to help Saginaw-Shiawassee and Bay County Habitat for Humanity make critical home repairs for mid-Michigan veterans and working families.

Congressman Kildee recently announced $520,000 for the Saginaw-Shiawassee Habitat for Humanity and the Bay County Habitat for Humanity to replace and repair energy systems and roofs for local families Thursday in Bay City. This funding is one of 10 mid-Michigan community projects for which Kildee recently secured funding.

Today, Congressman Kildee joined Bay County Habitat for Humanity and the Bay Veterans Foundation to repair the home of U.S. Army Master Sargent Jasen Sanchez. Sanchez is returning home from deployment in May, but his family's home was recently severely damaged by renters. Bay County Habitat for Humanity and Bay Veterans Foundation are making repairs, so Sanchez and his family can move back home.

Kildee also met with Paul Cormier, a mid-Michigan Coast Guard veteran who will directly benefit from the funding Congressman Kildee secured.

"I'm hopefully part of a future program. I have a house that needs a lot of help. I'm very honored to be part of this, to get this help for my house, because without Habitat, there's no way I could get the job done myself. So, I'm honored that I could be part of this and all I can say, is thank you very much," said Paul Cormier.

Home repair projects, like those undertaken by Habitat for Humanity, can help to lessen the burden of home expenses for working families in mid-Michigan. In addition, by making critical repairs to energy systems, roofs and more to increase the energy efficiency of their homes, Habitat for Humanity is lowering energy costs for families.

The funding Kildee secured will help Habitat for Humanity continue their important work, which Bay County, LiUNA Local 1098, the Bay Area Community Foundation, United Way of Bay County, and countless other community organizations and businesses agree helps lower costs for families, create jobs and bolster our local economy.

"We would like to thank Congressman Dan Kildee for being a champion in the 5th District of our families desperately needing help! With this funding, Bay County Habitat for Humanity will be able to help our veterans with critical home repairs that are needed to allow them to stay in their homes," said Brian Krause, Executive Director, Bay County Habitat for Humanity.

"We wholeheartedly thank Congressman Dan Kildee, who worked hard to have Appropriations Committee projects funded to benefit local communities he serves. Saginaw-Shiawassee Habitat for Humanity is so grateful for funding that will help low- to modest-income homeowners with grants to replace big ticket items such as furnaces, boilers, central air conditioners, water heaters and insulation they would otherwise not be able to replace without assistance," said Carmen Mora, Executive Director of Saginaw-Shiawassee Habitat for Humanity.
