Today, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks released a statement regarding the closure of several beaches on the Rockaway peninsula. Congressman Meeks stated:

"The plans to extend Rockaway Beach closures through July are extremely concerning. The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a tremendous financial burden on local businesses and many of the small businesses on the Rockaway peninsula rely on the summer months for the bulk of their annual revenue. However, it is imperative that the construction causing these closures is completed for the safety of residents and businesses in the Rockaways to address erosion issues. The resiliency of the peninsula's infrastructure, residents' concerns, and calls from small businesses are all extremely important. I'm pleased that in working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, we were able to provide an alternative plan for the summer beach closures. It is my hope that the New York City Parks Department will reconsider the alternative plan provided by the Army Corps and constructively work toward providing a solution that addresses the entire Rockaway community's concerns," said Congressman Gregory W. Meeks.
