House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued this statement following President Biden's State of the Union address:

"This has been a tough year for many Americans, with COVID-19 and high prices, but -- as President Biden made clear tonight -- he and Congressional Democrats have been hard at work to cut their taxes, lower health care costs, fight inflation, and help working families.

"With the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are creating a government that looks out for the middle class, working families, small businesses, and the vulnerable who work hard, not a government that jumps for the top one percent and biggest corporations. With historic investments in our communities, we are creating jobs in America and growing the middle class while helping Americans earn more.

"Tonight's demonstration of bipartisan unity showed that our entire country stands with President Biden in solidarity with Ukraine in the wake of Russia's appalling attack. I commend President Biden and the administration for crippling the Russian economy and directly targeting Vladimir Putin, leaving Russia even weaker strategically, economically, and diplomatically.

"I thank my virtual State of the Union guest, Ernest Pagan. As a New Haven native, a proud member of Carpenters Local 326, and a father of three, Ernie knows firsthand what it means to have leaders deliver on their promise to create jobs and invest in our economy.

"President Biden and Democrats will continue working this year to grow opportunity and give everyone a fair shot. I look forward to fighting for his vision which includes legislation I have championed for decades--the expanded and improved monthly Child Tax Credit, the Paycheck Fairness Act, and paid family and medical leave. When we give hardworking people like Ernie, and his brothers and sisters at Carpenters Local 326, a shot, extraordinary things are possible."
