DeLauro Statement on Uvalde, Texas School Shooting

Statement

Date: May 24, 2022
Issues: Guns

House Appropriations Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) released the following statement on the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

"Fourteen children and one teacher. There are no words to describe our collective grief over this unnecessary loss of life.

"My heart aches for the students, teachers, school staff, and Uvalde community. Today's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas is yet another senseless attack that is the direct result of a repeated lack of action to get guns off our streets.

"This is an avoidable American tragedy, but unfortunately, it is not unusual. Last week, it was a racist mass shooting in Buffalo. Today, fourteen students and their teacher have been lost forever. I am terrified about what will happen next. Mass shootings are taking the lives of babies, parents, brothers and sisters. In my home state of Connecticut, the tragedy that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School has traumatized our community and we will never be the same. We lost 26 beautiful souls on that cold December day, and we now mourn for those taken from us at Robb Elementary School today.

"The gun lobby and Republicans have stonewalled gun legislation efforts for years, but we will not give up. It is the responsibility of Congress to answer this call. The American people are waiting on us to take immediate action to save innocent lives.

"As Members of Congress, one of our most sacred duties is to protect the American people. On that measure, we have failed--and doing nothing to prevent these tragedies is both cowardly and shameful. Until we take action, innocents will continue to die.

"Enough is enough."
