Chairwoman Stabenow Calls on USDA to Address Effects of Baby Formula Shortage for WIC Families

Today, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, called on Secretary Vilsack and USDA to address the effects of the baby formula shortage for families and babies who rely on the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.

"Millions of Americans rely on the WIC program to get baby formula for their children, so the current shortages are extremely concerning for parents across our country," said Senator Stabenow. "I am urging USDA to do everything they can to make sure families on WIC have more formula options to keep their babies fed and healthy."

USDA is providing WIC families with the flexibility to use their benefits to buy different types of formula products, including different sized cans of formula or different brands in the event of limited availability of any one option. Senator Stabenow requested more information from USDA on its use of these and other flexibilities and opportunities for additional action to support to support WIC families throughout this difficult time.
