Sarbanes: All-Of-Government Approach Needed to Lead on Clean Energy [VIDEO]

Statement

Date: April 5, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Energy

Today, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) called for an all-of-government approach to reduce emissions, transition to energy efficient technologies and advance our energy independence. Electrifying the U.S. Postal Service's vehicle fleet, he explained, would support the federal government's national climate strategy and be a strong business decision for the U.S. Postal Service as it works to provide Americans with reliable mail delivery services.

At the Committee on Oversight and Reform's hearing entitled, "It's Electric: Developing the Postal Service Fleet of the Future," Congressman Sarbanes highlighted that the U.S. Postal Service's recent purchase of 50,000 vehicles -- only 10,000 of which will be electric -- fails to invest in the country's collective future. He urged the U.S. Postal Service to ensure that all next generation delivery vehicles be more closely aligned with the Biden Administration's climate goals.

"The federal government should be a leader in reducing emissions and transitioning to greener technologies," said Congressman Sarbanes.

He continued, "I understand that the Postal Service is independent, and is not directly under the authority of the President and the Administration the way some other agencies are, but responding to the climate crisis requires an all-of-government and all-of-society approach."
