Dr. Ruiz Announces I Care Act To Help Get Residents Results

Statement

Date: June 1, 2022
Location: Palm Desert, CA

Today, Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-36) announced legislation that would allow Congressional offices to continue providing casework services for former constituents who are affected by redistricting and have pending cases. Dr. Ruiz's legislation, the I CARE ACT, would help ensure cases do not slip through the cracks when handed off between Congressional offices.

"I care deeply about the people I represent," said Dr. Ruiz. "For people with open casework who live in cities affected by updated Congressional districts, they can face barriers in getting the assistance they need. My bill will allow me more time to help them with their cases after updated districts go into effect."

BACKGROUND

Based on a 2021 Casework Report for California's 36th District, Dr. Ruiz's office saw the largest volume of casework from the cities of Palm Springs and Palm Desert.

Under current law, Congressional offices are prohibited from providing casework services for former constituents who no longer reside in the Member's district due to redrawn Congressional maps. If passed, the I CARE Act would allow Dr. Ruiz's office to continue providing assistance to former constituents in cities like Palm Springs and Palm Desert for a period of six months after the implementation of updated Congressional districts.
