REP. WILD VOTES TO PROTECT RIGHT TO MARRIAGE EQUALITY

Press Release

Date: July 19, 2022

oday, Representative Susan Wild voted to enshrine marriage equality into federal law, ensuring that the protections established by Loving and Obergefell remain in place.

"I am proud to vote in support of protecting the right to marriage equality for all," said Rep. Wild. "But these rights should not be called into question. Make no mistake, there are those in this country working to chip away at our rights, but also do not forget that there are those, including the majority of Americans, who will not stand by and watch. Our votes in the House over the last several weeks are proof."

H.R. 8404, the Respect for Marriage Act, is a bipartisan and bicameral act that will enshrine marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples. The Respect for Marriage Act also repeals the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that the Supreme Court effectively rendered inert in the landmark decisions United States v. Windsor and Obergefell which hold that marriage equality is a constitutional right. In addition, this bill prohibits any individual acting under state law from denying recognition of an out-of-state marriage based on the sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin of the individuals in the marriage.
