Arrington Statement on SCOTUS Decision on "Remain in Mexico" Policy

Today, Rep. Jodey C. Arrington (TX-19) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court's ruling on the Trump Administration's "Remain in Mexico" policy.

"Today's ruling highlights the importance of having a Commander in Chief committed to effectively enforcing our immigration laws and securing the border," said Rep. Arrington.

"The Court's reinforcement of the broad authority in immigration matters granted to the Executive Branch highlights the differences between Presidents Trump and Biden, and makes the Biden Administration all the more responsible for the unprecedented security and humanitarian crisis at our southern border."

"Under the Trump Administration, our border was secure, our communities were safe, and our laws were enforced. In contrast, President Biden has willfully and intentionally dismantled every effective immigration policy with President Trump's name on it, creating unmitigated chaos and undermining the safety and sovereignty of our nation."

Background:

* In January of 2019, the Trump Administration began implementing the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) or "Remain in Mexico" policy. This highly effective program deterred roughly 70,000 immigrants from illegally entering the U.S.
* Under MPP, DHS could return "other than Mexican" (OTM) migrants caught entering illegally or without proper documents back to Mexico -- where the Mexican government agreed to provide them with protection for the duration of their stays -- to await removal hearings. They are then paroled into the United States long enough to apply for asylum.
* After repeated attempts by the Biden Administration to terminate the program and legal battles, President Biden announced that he would suspend new enrollments to MPP.
* This decision prompted the states of Texas and Missouri to file a lawsuit to force the reinstatement of Remain in Mexico.
* Today, SCOTUS ruled that the Biden Administration can effectively end the Remain in Mexico policy.
