REP. NEGUSE HELPS SECURE PASSAGE OF FEDERAL ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN

Today, Congressman Joe Neguse, Vice Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, voted in favor of passing the Assault Weapons Ban of 2021, H.R. 1808. The bill, which Neguse is a cosponsor of, prohibits the sale, transfer, manufacture, and importation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, like those used in countless mass shootings across America, including those in Boulder, Aurora, Buffalo, Uvalde, and Highland Park.

On July 20th, the 10-year anniversary of the tragic mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, Neguse spoke in favor of the legislation during a House Judiciary Committee markup, you can watch his remarks here.

"In 1994, lawmakers -- from both sides of the aisle -- came together to enact the same piece of legislation we passed today. They did so in the best interest of the common good and to protect our communities. Since the Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired in 2004, the scourge of gun violence has only grown more pervasive across our country." said Congressman Neguse. "I was honored to vote yes on this live-saving measure and will continue to do everything I can to ensure that in Washington we are putting Americans' safety above all else."

Neguse has been a staunch advocate for the federal assault weapons ban. Following a mass shooting at a grocery store in his district -- on March 22, 202 -- Neguse penned a letter to President Biden requesting he issue an executive order banning the importation of assault weapons.

In 2021 and 2022, Neguse and Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA) led a group of House Democrats in letters to President Biden requesting that he establish an Interagency Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention.
