Congressman Lamborn Votes NO on Democrats' Latest Gun-Grabbing Legislation

Press Release

Date: July 29, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Today, House Democrats rushed to the House Floor H.R. 1808, the Assault Weapons Ban. This unconstitutional gun-grabbing legislation would prohibit future sales of so-called "assault weapons" and "high-capacity magazines" to law-abiding American citizens.

Congressman Lamborn issued the following statement after voting NO on H.R. 1808:

"It is alarming that House Democrats continue their mission of fearmongering and disseminating misinformation to the American people. This legislation is blatantly unconstitutional and targets the standard types of firearms that American citizens most often choose to defend their homes, families, and property. The Democrats' disdain for our constitution and the rule of law insults the American people and our way of life. I strongly oppose H.R. 1808 and I will never stop defending our constitution, including a person's inalienable right to bear arms. If Democrats were serious about preventing gun violence, they would secure our border and go after criminals, not responsible, safe, and legal gun owners."

H.R. 1808 would:

-Ban the most popular firearms for self-defense, target shooting, and hunting by law-abiding Americans.

-Ban semi-automatic firearms, meaning one round is fired with each pull of the trigger (not to be confused with fully automatic firearms which are already heavily regulated).

-Arbitrarily bans several firearm models while inconsistently exempting others with the same functionality.

-Mandate de facto universal background checks for all transfers of grandfathered "assault weapons" including any gift, sale, or loan to any person for any reason. The only scenarios in which a gun recipient would not need a background check are explicit and limited.

-Further ban civilian sales of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. While existing standard capacity magazines would be grandfathered there would be no legal method for transferring their possession to any person for any reason.
