Dingell Blasts Supreme Court Ruling in West Virginia v. EPA

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court's decision in West Virginia v. EPA:
"The Supreme Court's decision to restrict the EPA's ability to reduce carbon emissions will set our world back decades, if not more, in the fight to combat climate change. Stripping the EPA of its ability to keep our air clean sets a dangerous precedent and opens the doors for polluters of all kinds to put profits over the health of our planet. According to this Supreme Court, all of our nation's landmark environmental protection laws -- including the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act -- could face the chopping block. This means a potential return to the polluted waters and smokestack-filled air of our past, which was catastrophic to our environmental and public health.

"The devastating impact of this ruling cannot be understated. Clean air and clean water are basic human rights, and the Supreme Court has sent a clear message that those fundamental rights are not guaranteed in this country. We only have one Earth, and today, our nation's highest court has set it on the path for destruction.

"In the past week, the Supreme Court has ruled against the will of the American people on gun violence prevention, women's healthcare, and now on our environment. Democrats in the House of Representatives will continue to fight for legislation that reduces our carbon emissions, protects our environment, and gives justice to those who have been disproportionately impacted by antiquated federal policies. It is my hope that the Senate will renew efforts to propose meaningful legislation for House consideration to protect our Earth and send to the President's desk without delay. We cannot afford to waste another minute."
