Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), who serves as co-chair of the Congressional Apprenticeship Caucus, released the following statement on President Biden's student loan debt plan.

"President Biden's plan to cancel student debt means Americans who decided to pursue careers that did not require taking on student debt or who worked hard to pay off their debt already, have to now pick up the tab on other Americans' student loan debt. The majority of the taxpayer-funded debt cancellation will benefit Americans at the higher end of the income distribution - even making six-figure salaries. Even a Clinton-era Treasury Secretary agrees that this plan is expected to make inflation worse. This is unfair for hardworking Americans who are already struggling to make ends meet due to sky-high inflation. This is nothing more than a blatant bribe to score political points ahead of the election.

"Pursuing a college degree is ridiculously expensive and not the only path that Americans have to take to earn strong wages. As co-chair of the Congressional Apprenticeship Caucus, I work on solutions to promote apprenticeship opportunities that allow students to earn money while they learn a new trade. I have also introduced legislation to increase transparency on the cost of attending college to give students helpful financial information to compare costs," said Guthrie.

Background:

Guthrie's Net Price Calculator Improvement Act increases transparency and makes information easier to access about the cost of college attendance.
Guthrie's Early Educators Apprenticeship Act and PARTNERS Act create more opportunities for career advancement through work-based learning programs.
