Carl Announces $35 Million in GOMESA Revenues for Alabama

Press Release

Date: July 15, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Jerry Carl (R-AL) issued the following statement regarding the Interior Department's disbursement of $35 million in GOMESA revenues to Alabama for 2022, which is significantly less revenue than prior years as a result of President Biden's war on American energy.

Every dollar of offshore energy revenue that comes to Alabama goes toward coastal recreation and conservation projects such as shoreline restoration and hurricane protection. While we welcome these dollars, it is unfortunate we are missing out on millions of dollars in revenue because of the Biden administration's war on American energy production. Let's be clear: President Biden has cancelled lease sales, blocked pipelines, and delayed permits, and this has significantly reduced GOMESA revenues to our state. Alabama depends heavily on these revenues to withstand natural disasters, and that's why I introduced a bill last year to require the Interior Department to pay Gulf states the funds we are missing out on due to President Biden's harmful actions.

Last year, Congressman Carl introduced the Gulf Conservation and Recreation Funding Act to require the Interior Department to pay GOMESA states the revenues they are missing out on due to leases cancelled by President Biden's Executive Order 14008 on January 26, 2021.
