Amide Reacts to House Democrats' Gun Control Agenda

U.S. Representative Mark Amodei (NV-02) issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 7910 -- the "Unconstitutional Gun Restrictions Act" and H.R. 2377 -- the "Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act":

"The Biden Administration and the majority party in Congress have now pushed their anti-Second Amendment agenda to extreme ends. In line with the Democrat motto of "never let a good crisis go to waste," they have, in less than two weeks following the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, forced a vote solely on gun control, without any provisions addressing school safety. In the face of this horrific school shooting, the majority party in the House did not accept a single amendment that Republicans introduced on policies for safer schools. The reality is that in failing to confront this undeniable issue and find meaningful solutions, the Left has succeeded in passing the most blatantly anti-gun legislation in the history of this country.

"While the messaging of this bill will be turned into who does and does not support the safety of our children and communities, it's awful that commonsense measures that actually work to harden our schools are ignored by House Democrats in favor of an anti-Second Amendment agenda they have openly pushed for years. We have hardened our airports, our places of worship, and our government buildings, including the Capitol, in response to tragic events, but for purely political agenda reasons we cannot agree to add needed security infrastructure when it comes to our schools.

"If this were really about school safety, that is the first thing the majority party would take a look at in terms of sound policy solutions. For example, the Secure Every School and Protect our Nation's Children Act would focus on assessing schools for weaknesses in security and mental health services; the Police Officers Protecting Children Act would allow law enforcement officers or retired law enforcement officers to carry a concealed firearm onto school grounds if approved by the local school board; and the Luke and Alex School Safety Act, which would require the Department of Homeland Security to establish a Federal Clearinghouse on School Safety Best Practices. These are all Republican-proposed measures to address this issue, which I have cosponsored, never considered by the House majority party.

"In a complete and total infringement of our rights, H.R. 2377 strips American citizens of their due process in allowing the seizure of their firearms without notice or any opportunity to be heard. In H.R. 7910, Americans are stripped of property rights and basic self-defense options, as the mandated restrictions would make it difficult to access a firearm in your own home -- even in an emergency -- due to "safe storage" provisions. Moreover, the capacity limitations would ban some of the most common firearms used by law-abiding Americans.

"The overwhelming supermajority of the people who own firearms are law-abiding citizens. 50% of new gun sales are to women. When we have women who are purchasing guns in record numbers, and the overwhelming supermajority of gun owners who are law-abiding, we need to do better than ignoring school safety and attacking one of the most law-abiding groups in the country. And what legislation has Speaker Pelosi brought to this floor to help Americans deal with gas and diesel price increases? To curb inflation on food costs? To turn around our skidding economy? Correct, nothing. Clearly, the majority agenda folks care about nothing other than their agenda. I vote "nay.""
