Today, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks released a statement after the House passed historic gun violence prevention legislation, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Rep. Meeks stated:

"Our country has been relentlessly asking for tangible acts to protect our children, keep our schools safe, and reduce gun violence across the country. Three decades since the last bipartisan agreement on gun violence prevention, we are finally able to deliver for the American people. Building on the recently passed House legislations -- the Protecting Our Kids Act and Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act -- we have now passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which will expand background checks for those 18-21 years old, stop domestic abusers from getting guns, criminalize gun trafficking and straw purchasing, include millions of dollars for school safety, and more. This is not the end of the fight against gun violence, we have much more work to do.

"After the Supreme Court issued a devastating decision yesterday in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, which removes the rights of states to regulate guns in public spaces, the fight for commonsense gun laws is imperative now more than ever. The Supreme Court's decision to overturn a New York State law that has stood for more than a hundred years is unfortunately likely to empower those engaged in political and racially motivated violence, and members of unlawful militias.

"Our country deserves a continuation of the across-the-aisle cooperation and determination we have now to keep our communities safe. I look forward to President Biden signing this into law and I will not stop working to address the epidemic of gun violence in our country," said Congressman Gregory W. Meeks.
