Location: Washington, DC

Today, Representative Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement applauding the 8.7 percent increase to Social Security benefits and calling for passage of the Social Security 2100 Act.

"Millions of seniors across Ohio will soon receive a big boost to their Social Security checks," said Rep. Kaptur. "With an average increase of $140 a month, we're putting real money in seniors' pockets that will go a long way in helping with everyday expenses. Now, we must build on this progress by passing the Social Security 2100 Act. Our bill would repeal the harmful Windfall Elimination and Government Pension Offset Provisions, increase benefits, and cut taxes for millions of seniors. Social Security is a sacred commitment to America's retirees, and I'll continue fighting to strengthen its promise for present and future generations."

The Social Security 2100 Act is comprehensive legislation co-introduced by Rep. Kaptur that would strengthen Social Security by:

Repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset Provision (GPO) which reduce benefits for police officers, firefighters, teachers, and other public servants
Providing an across-the-board benefits increase for current and future beneficiaries
Improving the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) formula to protect seniors against inflation
Cutting taxes on benefits for 23 million Americans
