"House Republicans are running out of time to avert an economic catastrophe of their own making. Today's update from the Treasury Department needs to be a wakeup call for Speaker McCarthy -- he has wasted enough of the House's time appeasing his extreme MAGA Republican allies. It is unconscionable that, instead of safeguarding American jobs and our economy by ensuring the United States pays its bills on time, House Republicans are celebrating their dead-on-arrival Default on America Act, which will slash veterans' support, gut education and public safety, and eviscerate lifeline programs for working families. House Democrats are ready to act now to prevent a devastating debt default. We will not allow extreme MAGA Republicans to harm American families and erase our record economic recovery with a ruinous ransom note or a devastating default crisis of their own making. I implore my Republican colleagues to stand up against the dangerous and misguided pro-default mentality that is festering within their caucus and to instead work with Democrats and pass a clean bill so we can move forward."
