CELEBRATING THE ENVIRONMENT

We have a Moral Responsibility to Protect the Earth

WASHINGTON, DC— On the eve of the 36th Annual Earth Day, House Democratic Caucus Chairman, James E. Clyburn released the following statement:

"We have a moral responsibility to protect the earth and ensure that our children and grandchildren have a healthy and sustainable environment in which to live.

"Environmental protection doesn't happen in a vacuum. You can't separate the impact on the environment from the impact on our families and communities. Environmental policy must strike a balance between the earth's best interests and our citizen's pressing needs.

"But reducing harmful emissions, abating our dependence on foreign oil and developing alternative renewable energy sources have benefits that go beyond environmental health, they improve personal health, enhance national security and encourage our nation's economic viability.

"I'm heartened by the growing awareness of global warming among important communities and organizations in our nation. In particular, the emerging call from our nation's evangelicals to protect God's creation is substantial. I applaud the evangelical environmental network, their ordained vision and the powerful new documentary, ‘The Great Warming,' of which they are a sponsor.

"It will take new voices such as these in hand with strong partnerships to advance environmental policy that protects and preserves our precious world for future generations."
