CONGRESSMAN HANK JOHNSON ON TONIGHT'S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

Tonight, President Bush has an opportunity to address the urgent concerns of the American people.

In these historic first one-hundred hours, the 110th Congress has passed practical solutions to pressing problems. We have raised the minimum wage, cut interest on student loans, lowered prescription drug prices, reduced subsidies to Big Oil, and invested in renewable energy. But while I look forward to hearing the President affirm his support for our accomplishments, the issue weighing heaviest on the hearts of the American people is the war in Iraq.

The American people are united in their determination that this conflict be ended. This war has proven to be one of the gravest missteps in the recent history of our country. We, the American people, trusted that our leaders would serve us honestly and capably. Instead, we have been misled; instead, President Bush has failed at every opportunity to secure the peace in Iraq.

The time for talk has passed. Americans deserve real leadership, not more of the same rhetoric. It is time for President Bush to face the music and respond to the urgent demands of a frustrated country. I hope he will explain how he plans to push for a political settlement, not an escalation of violence, in Iraq. And I hope he will tell the American people how and when he intends to bring our brave men and women home to their families.

This is what Americans everywhere and my constituents back home in DeKalb, Rockdale, and Gwinnett counties demand.
