Boozman Votes to Improve Head Start Programs
Calls Program "Vital" to Nation's Interests

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today joined a bipartisan majority to better prepare the nation's children for educational success by voting for H.R. 1429, the Improving Head Start Act of 2007.

"As a former school board member, I have seen the benefit of the Head Start program for our children," Boozman said. "This legislation emphasizes what works in preparing disadvantaged children for school, including reading, math, and English skills. Head Start is vital to the nation's interests, and I am proud to cast a vote to benefit America's children."

The legislation also steps up teacher quality and training by requiring at least 50 percent of all Head Start teachers nationwide have a bachelor's or advanced degree in early childhood education or related field by September 30, 2013. Additionally, it increases fiscal controls to ensure Head Start money is used responsibly and efficiently.

"Despite the long history of Head Start, there still remains a significant amount of work to ensure our children are ready for elementary school. This bill will allow Head Start to grow and further benefit the children, and ultimately the people, of the United States," Boozman said.
