Brown Statement On Coal Industry Effort On Climate Change

More than 40 U.S. companies from coal-related industries, including several Ohio companies today announced a new coalition and set of principles regarding federal climate change legislation. The coalition announced support for federal climate change legislation such as a mandatory cap-and-trade program, provided several criteria are met. U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released the following statement in response:

"I am encouraged that utilities, manufacturers, mining companies and others are engaging on the issue of climate change. Their decision to speak out now is another sign that the message is getting through: global warming is real, it is not self-correcting, and if we do not act, its destructive effects will be felt by our children and grandchildren. As a major source of global energy, coal and related industries can and will play a pivotal role in overcoming this global environmental threat."
