Issue Position: Preserving Social Security

Senator Wyden believes that the Social Security safety net ought to be preserved. President Bush's proposal to privatize Social Security would threaten long-term solvency and would result in cuts in benefits. Senator Wyden has voted many times to preserve the Social Security Trust Funds and has opposed efforts to use those trust funds to balance the budget or mask budget deficits. He believes Congress must work in a bipartisan fashion to find workable solutions to fix Social Security.

Senator Wyden also understands the importance of adequately funding Social Security administrative offices. In 2006, Senator Wyden, along with some of his colleagues in the Senate, sent a letter to the Senate leadership asking that Congress cover Social Security administrative expenses. This letter prevented temporary furloughs in 2007 that could have resulted in service disruptions across Oregon.

Senator Wyden is committed to protecting Social Security for both the current enrollees and future generations. Social Security is a contract between government and its citizens, and Senator Wyden is dedicated to preserving that bond.
