Fleming Signs Marriage Protection Pledge

Today Rep. Barry Fleming, candidate for Georgia's 10th Congressional District, signed FRCAction's Marriage Protection Pledge. FRCAction is the legislative action arm of the Family Research Council.

The pledge states:

"I, Barry Fleming, pledge to the families of the state of Georgia, and to all Americans, that I will protect the natural and historic definition of marriage by supporting a marriage protection amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

I believe that marriage consists of the union of one man and one woman. Every person has an equal right to marry a person of the opposite sex.

I believe that the uniting of persons of the same sex in a civil union, domestic partnership or other similar relationship should not be valid or recognized with any legal benefits or privileges."

"Over the past several years the need for a marriage protection amendment to the U.S. Constitution has become overwhelmingly obvious. As Majority Whip in the state House, I successfully helped lead the fight for Georgia's marriage amendment," said Fleming.

"Yesterday's California court ruling made it clear that liberals are determined to use the full faith and credit clause to force conservative states, like Georgia, to recognize same sex marriages. I believe a marriage protection amendment to the U.S. Constitution is the only way to defend our state's right to recognize only traditional marriages," said Fleming.

"The line is clear, a constitutional amendment would protect traditional marriage laws, and in the last election Paul Broun campaigned against a federal marriage protection amendment," said Cam Kirbo, Fleming Campaign Manager. "The people of the 10th District deserve a representative who has a clear, consistent position supporting a marriage amendment," Kirbo added.
