On Katrina Anniversary, Peters Takes Action

On the three-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Congressional candidate Gary Peters took action here in Oakland County. On Friday, August 29th, Gary Peters, Colleen Ochoa Peters, and members of the Peters for Congress team joined members of Oakland County Habitat for Humanity to help construct a new home for a family in Pontiac.

"Michigan needs leaders who will take action, not just in the halls of Congress, but here in our communities as well," said Gary Peters, a fifth-generation Oakland County native and former Navy Reserve Lt. Commander. "I have taken action my whole career, and when I get to Congress, I will take action to fight for Oakland County families and jobs."

When completed, the new home at 362 Ferry Avenue in Pontiac will provide a safe and secure living environment for single mother Amy Perry and her two children.

"Sadly, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was not the only time that our leaders in Washington failed to take action," Peters continued. "Here in Michigan, our economy has lost jobs for the longest period since the Great Depression, but Congressman Knollenberg has continued to support the failed policies of George Bush that have made it harder for families like the Perrys to get a fresh start."

Since launching his "Take Action Now" initiative earlier this summer, Gary Peters and his supporters have taken time each week to help out with different community service projects across Oakland County. Among other projects, they have collected and sorted food donations for the Gleaners Community Food Bank, restored playing fields for the Boys and Girls Club in Royal Oak, and worked at the Stogdill Pancake Breakfast in Pontiac.
