Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy On Oil Drilling: "Shockingly Misinformed" ??

responding to today's NEWSDAY story ["McCarthy Is Open To Lifting Offshore Oil Drilling Ban"], her Republican opponent, Mineola Mayor Jack Martins issued the following statement:

"It's astonishing that Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy has now finally decided to ‘consider' how to reduce ever-increasing gas prices that are choking middle-class Long Islanders. The fact is, she has consistently voted against measures that would reduce the price of gas and energy, including her opposition to new drilling and new refineries. Her sudden turn-about says more about her fear of losing re-election, than any change of principle or policy. The fact that she's still undecided about resuming offshore drilling is another example of her failure to lead and her disregard for the plight of Nassau's working families and seniors. While she ponders, panders and ultimately worries more about offending her pal, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, people here in Nassau continue to pay some of the highest gas and energy prices in the country. Will the price of gas have to reach $6 a gallon for Congresswoman McCarthy to make a decision? I absolutely support tapping into America's 18 billion barrels of offshore oil as a way to drive down gas prices and begin to end our dependence on foreign oil. Her Long Island colleague and fellow Democrat, Congressman Steve Israel, called the position to resume drilling ‘shockingly misinformed' --- I call Congresswoman McCarthy's failure to take any position ‘shockingly irresponsible' --- and I invite her to learn more about this issue by joining me for a one-on-one Town Hall meeting where she can explain her position… that is, when she finds one."
