Senator Vivian Davis Figures to Announce 2008 Plans

Many Have Pressured Her to Run For U.S. Senate,
But is Alabama's Ready to Send It's First Woman to Washington?

This Saturday, August 22, State Senator Vivian Figures will hold a press conference at 10:00 AM in the ceremonial courtroom of Mobile's Government Plaza. She will announce her decision on whether to run for the U.S. Senate next year.

"After much thought and prayer and after receiving so many phone calls, I felt it was time to announce my plans for the future," says Senator Figures.

Senator Figures is serving her third term in Montgomery. She was elected in 1997 in a special election upon the death of her husband, Michael Figures. She was re-elected in 1998, 2002 and 2006. In 1993, she defeated an incumbent to win a seat on the Mobile City Council, where she served until 1997.

Senator Figures is well known for her work on behalf of Alabama's children. In the State Senate she serves as the Chairwoman of the Education Committee, where she led the successful effort for tougher background checks on education employees. She also serves on the Children's Youth Affairs and Human Resources Committee. After several years working across party lines, Senator Figures won passage for the Clean Indoor Air Act to prevent people from exposure to second hand smoke.

Jeff Sessions is seeking re-election in 2008. Alabama's junior senator, he remains one of the most vocal advocates for continuing American involvement in Iraq's civil war. Sessions is also a solid vote for the insurance, drug, and oil industry that are contributing large sums to his campaign.

"A.B.S. - Anyone but Sessions. If the people of Alabama do their homework, they will reach this conclusion very quickly," states Senator Figures.
