Letter to Constituents

Greetings to you from the campaign trail.

Yesterday I was in Bismarck, Grand Forks and Fargo to unveil my plan to tackle the spiraling cost of health care in North Dakota and Thursday I will be on the Joel Heitkamp Show, KFGO-AM 7.90, to talk more about it and take your questions.

Today I am campaigning in Washburn, Lisbon and Enderlin.

Of all of the issues facing our state, health care is one of the most important to me because I know that for many of you, in addition to taxes, it is one of your greatest sources of economic anxiety. It should be, because since Governor Hoeven took office health insurance premiums have gone up 75 percent.

Just as the Bush administration failed to address America's financial situation until a disaster occurred, the same will happen to health care in North Dakota if we continue with Hoeven's status-quo approach. The healthcare system as we know it is headed for a crisis.

The Mathern health plan includes the following initiatives.

* Provide health insurance coverage to every child
* Focus on prevention
* Protect health care providers
* Health insurance for all

Governor Hoeven has turned a blind eye to the growing crisis in health care. Fifteen thousand children are not covered by health insurance, 22 rural hospitals are operating at a deficit and could close if nothing is done, and fewer than half of the state's employers offer health insurance to their employees.

On Election Day let us show John Hoeven that North Dakotans deserve better.

I'll see you on the trail.

Sen. Tim Mathern
