Giannoulias Statement On Supreme Court's D.C. Gay Marriage Decision

Statement

Alexi Giannoulias released the following statement regarding the decision of the Supreme Court to allow D.C.'s same-sex marriage law to go into effect:

"Forty-three years ago, Chief Justice Warren wrote that "the freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men." Decades after Loving v Virginia, our laws have yet to fully embrace that fundamental truth. Today's Supreme Court decision, however, brings us one step closer to the type of equality that forms the cornerstone of American identity.

The right of our nation's capitol to issue licenses for same-sex marriage is about the type of full equality every citizen deserves. As couples throughout this nation celebrate today's victory, we are reminded again that battling marriage discrimination is just one of a series of battles that test our national character, including the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. Today's victory renews our spirit and resolve to press on in these endeavors, so that we may finally guarantee that "orderly pursuit of happiness" to all."
