United States Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias released a statement today following Republican Congressman Mark Kirk's introduction of the Iran Sanctions Enhancement Act:

"I applaud Congressman Kirk for embracing a proposal that is nearly identical to one I put out last year as part of my plan to isolate Iran's ruling Revolutionary Guards and promote democratic reform. In that plan I called for the U.S. government to hold individuals and corporations accountable if they profit from dealings with the Iranian government. Specifically, I pushed for the publication of a verified list of all companies doing business with the Revolutionary Guards and Iran's energy sector, and for higher tax rates on investment returns made from companies that profit from business with the Guards.

"I continue to believe that a nuclear-armed Iran presents the most significant threat to Israel, the Middle East, and the world. That is why as State Treasurer I have championed successful efforts to divest the State's pension funds from companies doing business with the Iranian government or helping to tap the country's oil and mineral resources. As a U.S. Senator, I will continue to push a comprehensive set of policies that would encourage the Iranian government to abandon its nuclear ambitions, discourage companies from aiding the Iranian energy sector, and empower Iranian citizens in their fight for basic rights."
