Giannoulias Calls on Kirk to Stop Putting Politics Ahead of IL Job Creation

Press Release

Date: March 18, 2010

With Illinois' unemployment rate hitting 12 percent, U.S. Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias today called on Republican Congressman Mark Kirk to stop putting politics and obstructionism ahead of creating new jobs in Illinois. Despite the fact that it will create 250,000 new jobs and enjoyed bipartisan support, Mark Kirk voted against the HIRE Act, which President Obama is set to sign into law today.

"Mark Kirk said at the beginning of the economic meltdown that 'unemployment is not a big issue.' Congressman Kirk must still think unemployment is not a big issue since he voted against the bipartisan jobs bill the President Obama will sign into law today. If Congressman Kirk cared more about creating jobs than scoring cheap political points, he would have joined the Republicans who worked with the President to get this jobs bill done," Giannoulias said. "I urge the Congressman to end his obstruction and support these critical jobs bills going forward."

In addition to supporting the passage of the HIRE Act, Giannoulias is the only candidate in the Illinois race for U.S. Senate with a comprehensive, detailed jobs plan to Illinois economy back on track and put an end to the corporate practices that resulted in the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
