Gerlach Supports Allowing Troops To Complete Mission In Afghanistan

Congressman Jim Gerlach (PA-6th) issued the following statement Wednesday after the House overwhelming rejected a resolution that called for withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year:

"I believe our strategy in Afghanistan must be based on recommendations from our skilled military leaders on the ground, not political whims in Washington," Gerlach said. "Today's overwhelming bipartisan vote should send a very clear message that we will not permit Afghanistan to revert to a safe haven for radicals and a place where the Taliban and al Qaida can plot and train for attacks against our troops, our citizens and our allies.

"The brave men and women fighting for our country have made outstanding progress and have kept the Taliban on the run. Our troops deserve the total support of Congress so that they can complete their mission and return home safely. I supported President Obama's decision to send 30,000 additional troops to ensure success in Afghanistan, and commend the commander-in-chief for relying on advice from General Stanley McChrystal and other military leaders rather than liberal interest groups."

Gerlach voted against the withdrawal measure along with166 Republicans and 189 Democrats.
