Blog: Alexi Talks About Jobs in Aurora

Statement

Date: Sept. 20, 2010

This weekend, Alexi was in Aurora talking about the urgent need to create jobs and strengthen the middle class. He spoke about how the middle class has been "decimated" by reckless Republican economic policies, and he shared his own comprehensive plan for getting our economy back on track.

The Beacon-News reports:

AURORA -- Signs on the bus said it was all about jobs on Sunday, but the candidates' arrival was about something else, too.

In front of 120 union members chanting "Jobs!," Gov. Pat Quinn was at the Painters Union's Aurora headquarters Sunday afternoon as part of the nationwide "All About Jobs Bus Tour."

It was also 44 days until election day in Illinois.

The tour, sponsored by the Aurora-based Painters District Council No. 30 and the Kane County Democrats, brought U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster there to speak, too. [...]

Giannoulias said that working families have been sorely hurt by the downturn in the economy.

"The middle class working family -- the backbone of this country -- has been decimated," Giannoulias said, noting that the unemployment rate is higher than 10 percent in Illinois. According the Illinois Department of Labor Security, 10.1 percent of the Illinois labor force was unemployed as of August 2010.

"We fight for working families who don't want a handout or a bailout, they just want a job," he said.
