Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias campaigned today with Congressmen Bobby Rush, Danny Davis and other African-American leaders to highlight his plan for solving critical issues confronting America's cities.

As part of his agenda, Giannoulias outlined proposals to stem home foreclosures, curb youth violence and create jobs. Together, these policies comprise a comprehensive set of solutions for solving problems facing Illinois urban communities today.

"Cash-strapped governments short on resources have been forced to make cuts at a time when residents need their services the most," Giannoulias said. "That's why it's more crucial than ever that we develop an aggressive plan aimed at creating a strong foundation for our cities and position them to thrive."

Giannoulias' plan focuses on creating jobs through the funding the "Put Illinois to Work" program, changing the bankruptcy code to stem home foreclosures and fully funding after school programs and early childhood education programs designed to combat spiking youth violence.

"Alexi understands the problems American cities and their residents are facing," Rush said. "His willingness to tackle some of our largest and most overlooked challenges demonstrates that he will make a great Senator for the people of Illinois. Those ideas and support for programs that will help get people back to work, curb senseless violence and keep them in their homes will benefit the entire state."

The agenda builds on Giannoulias' record as Illinois State Treasurer where he offered a low-interest loan program to small businesses that created hundreds of jobs, helped hundreds Illinois families attain sustainable mortgages through his Finally Home program, and established a scholarship program to help up some 3,000 need-based Illinois high school students attend college. He also has implemented a Bank On Illinois program targeting unbanked residents and a micro loan program in urban areas so families don't fall prey to payday lenders.

"Alexi has a long record of working with the African-American community, and developing successful solutions that help strengthen neighborhoods," Davis said. "His record of achievement and comprehensive plans to move our cities and country forward show that he will serve as attentive and engaged leader on behalf of Illinois families in the U.S. Senate."
