A Message from David

Dear Friend,

It's official. Summer is finally here! This Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the kick-off of the summer driving season. And this driving season kicks off what looks to be another summer of high gas prices.

Last week, I had the opportunity to pump gas at Danny's Family Car Wash in Scottsdale as well as talk to many of you about high gas prices. I know I don't have to tell you that the price of gas and even groceries has put a major dent in the Arizona family wallet. However, progress is being made to continue opening up America's resources and lowering our dependence on foreign oil. This month House Republicans have taken several votes that would open our own resources, lower the price at the pump, and create jobs.

This past Tuesday in Washington, we welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Congress. In a joint session, he addressed the close relationship between the U.S. and Israel and reaffirmed his position that Israel will not return to the 1967 borders. I strongly support his remarks and believe now more than ever that America stands with Israel.

Last weekend was a special one for me. I was given the chance to visit Guantanamo Bay with several colleagues from both the House and the Senate. It was a very enlightening trip, and I saw firsthand how important that facility is to gathering intelligence and keeping Americans safe from the most deadly terrorists. We must continue to provide the intelligence community, as well as our troops, with everything they need to keep us safe.

This Memorial Day, let us remember these troops. Not only the ones who are currently fighting terrorism and protecting democracy, but those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. May we always be grateful, not this weekend but every day, for all who have endured hardships, wounds, and even death so that our nation may live.

To all our men and women in uniform I say, "Thank you for your service.'

Sincerely,

David Schweikert
Member of Congress
