Heinrich Condemns Republican Attacks Against Planned Parenthood

Statement

Date: Oct. 3, 2011
Location: Albuquerque, NM

U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-1) released the following statement today in response to Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations launching an investigation into Planned Parenthood and their affiliates demanding years of records, including state audits for the past 20 years. As a public provider of health care, Planned Parenthood and their affiliates submit to regular oversight and audits by the Department of Health and Human Services and state Medicaid programs:

"Chairman Stearns' request for documentation from Planned Parenthood is unfounded. Instead of focusing on the very serious business of creating jobs and growing the economy, Republicans in Congress are harassing organizations that provide essential health services for low-income men and women across the country. The American people don't want distractions, they want solutions. It's long overdue for Republicans to get on board and help put Americans back to work."

From his earliest days in Congress, Rep. Heinrich has stood up for women's health and equality, including a woman's right to affordable health care and the right to choose. When Republicans in the House sought to restrict how women with private insurance could spend private dollars through the Stupak-Pitts amendment to the Affordable Health Care Act, Rep Heinrich voted no. When the Republican majority tried to cut off federal funding to Planned Parenthood, which provides essential health services to one in five women at some point in their life, Rep. Heinrich fought back. Instead of passing job-creating bills, Republicans continue to waste time and taxpayers money casting votes on behalf of special interests and ideological crusades.
