SANDERS VOTES TO BLOCK NEW OVERTIME RULES

Congressman Bernie Sanders voted today to block the Bush Administration's new rules that would deprive an estimated 6 million workers from receiving overtime pay. The amendment in favor of eliminating the new rules passed by 223-193 when 20 Republicans joined Sanders and House Democrats by voting against the President.

Sanders said; "At a time when the middle class is shrinking, when poverty is increasing and when the average Vermonter is working longer hours for lower wages, the last thing in the world we need is to eliminate overtime pay for some 6 million workers. The Bush overtime proposal is a disaster for working people and I hope very much that the Republican Leadership will not strip this amendment out of the bill when it comes back for final passage."
