Happy Thanksgiving!

Statement

Date: Nov. 24, 2011

Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family and friends, and of course, reflect and give thanks for the blessings in our lives. Times are tough for many individuals and families, and for our nation. But despite the challenges we face as individuals and as a nation, we must always keep perspective and recognize all there is to be thankful for as Americans.

In 1863, with the nation marred by the bloodshed and strife of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln reminded Americans to give thanks for "the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies" while asking God to "heal the wounds of the nation." In 1943, in the midst of World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt gave thanks for the "march towards world-wide liberty" and acknowledged that "gallant men have won victories, have freed our homes from fear, have made tyranny tremble, and have laid the foundation for freedom of life in a world which will be free."

We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Kathy and I are thankful for two little boys, Teddy and Ryan, who are our sunshine and the love of our lives. It's been our blessing to know and learn from Hoosiers across the state as we dedicate ourselves to "Keeping the Republic' as Mr. Franklin and his peers charged us to do long ago. It is a blessing to live in a nation that guarantees freedom and liberty for all, and tasks all of us with the responsibility of protecting it and bettering it for future generations.

I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by family and the warmth of home.
