Statement of Congressman Pierluisi on Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Deal Reached by Congress

Statement

"I am pleased that, this morning, the House and Senate approved H.R. 3675. This legislation will extend the payroll tax cut for American workers for two additional months. Reducing the rate from 6.2% to 4.2% in January and February 2012 will result in an estimated $82 million remaining in the pockets of workers in Puerto Rico.

The bill will also avert a roughly 30% cut in reimbursement rates for doctors in Puerto Rico that treat Medicare patients, ensuring that these patients can continue to access high-quality care.

Finally, the bill ensures that millions of unemployed workers around the nation, including thousands in Puerto Rico, will continue to receive federal benefits to support their families as 2012 gets underway.

When Congress returns in January, I will work with my colleagues in the House and Senate in an effort to convert this two-month extension into a full-year extension."
