House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) issued the following statement regarding the recent announcement by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that the government would require employers -- including faith-based organizations -- to provide contraception and other sterilization and abortion services in their health care coverage.

"This rule and mandate by the Obama Administration's Department of Health and Human Services represents just how destructive the president's government-dictated health care system will be to the American people," said Chairman Price. "This entire law is predicated upon the assumption that a person's individual choices -- and in this case one's religious freedoms -- are to take a back seat to the wishes and the will of Washington bureaucrats. With this latest decision advanced by the Administration we see that in addition to undermining the quality, accessibility and affordability of health care, Washington is prepared to directly interfere with our fundamental right to religious freedom. There should be no doubt -- particularly in light of the decision by HHS -- that as the government begins to define and control what constitutes health care, the rights and well-being of the American people will be compromised. This mandate ought to be reversed, the right to religious freedom protected, and the entire health care law repealed so that we may advance positive patient-centered solutions that protect access to care without threatening a fundamental freedom of this country."
