Issue Position: Taxes

Issue Position

Low taxes allow business owners to invest in their companies, pay their employees, and create new jobs.

We do not have a tax problem in this country. What we have is a spending problem. President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid tell us that they only want to raise taxes on the richest Americans, and everyone else will not be affected. Wrong! There is no such thing as taxing only the rich. Everyone will be affected. Fewer jobs will be created, and in the case of small businesses, increased costs will be passed on to the consumer. Furthermore, even if the rich are defined to include those earning $114,000.00 or more, taxing them at 100% would not close the budget gap.

The claim that the top earners in America do not pay their fair share is a President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid myth meant to promote class warfare against the job creators. The top ten percent of the richest Americans pay over 50% of the income taxes paid in this country. The career politicians know that we can't tax our way out of the trillion dollar deficits, but they hope that paying more taxes will allow them to "kick the can" down the road one more time.

Arkansans want a fair tax system. A flat tax rate of 15% would save billions in unnecessary costs each year by reducing the size of the government bureaucracy and the expense of an unmanageable tax code.

Despite the rhetoric that Arkansans are fed daily by the anti-business media and career politicians, American Corporations are not inherently evil. Corporations are in the business to make a fair profit while providing the benefits of jobs and revenue. American Corporations pay one of the highest corporate tax rates of any industrialized nation. To encourage the return of jobs to this country, the corporate tax rate needs to be reduced to between fifteen and twenty percent. At the same time, we must close tax loopholes that allow companies to ship jobs overseas, make billions of dollars and pay no U.S. taxes. Additionally, corporations that are making substantial profits should not receive government subsidies. All American businesses should pay their fair share in taxes, but only their fair share.

Career politicians should stop trying to blame everyone else for their failed leadership. Their unwillingness to lead and make the tough decisions is why this country is broke with no real plan for deficit reduction. Telling Arkansans that they are going to tax now and cut later or spend now and cut later are lies that have been told over and over again by the career politicians. They hope to persuade us that if only we will raise taxes one more time, they will cut spending the next time. Why should you believe them now? The career politicians have short memories when it comes to spending cut promises.
