Fleming Blasts Senate Rejection of Conscience Protection

Statement

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. (LA-4) released the following statement after the Democrat-led U.S. Senate rejected conscience protection legislation that would have spared employers from being forced to pay for contraception as part of an Obamacare mandate placed on their employer-provider health insurance:

"Protecting the First Amendment religious freedoms of the American people should be a given for Congress. When the fundamental religious beliefs of our constituents are threatened, House and Senate members should act to end that threat. Period.

"President Obama's contraception mandate continues to demand coverage for contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs. Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) offered a simple amendment to allow employers to refuse to provide coverage that violates their conscience. Today, Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) joined 50 other Senators in defeating this basic protection. Their message is clear: the will of the government will be imposed, even if it violates the First Amendment. I am disappointed in the outcome of this vote and look forward to continuing the fight for common sense conscience protections."
